Gospel Definitions: Sovereign Grace Ministries

Filed under: Gospel Definitions — Trevin Wax @ 2:25 am

“Jesus Christ is the gospel.

“The good news is revealed in his birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. Christ’s crucifixion is the heart of the gospel, his resurrection is the power of the gospel, and his ascension is the glory of the gospel. Christ’s death is a substitutionary and propitiatory sacrifice to God for our sins. It satisfies the demands of God’s holy justice and appeases his holy wrath. It also demonstrates his mysterious love and reveals his amazing grace.

“Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man. There is no other name by which men must be saved. At the heart of all sound doctrine is the cross of Jesus Christ and the infinite privilege that redeemed sinners have of glorifying God because of what he has accomplished. Therefore, we want all that takes place in our hearts, churches, and ministries to proceed from and be related to the cross.”

  2. Sovereign Grace Ministries has their own definition of the gospel because redefining Biblical terms is critical to their being able to be thought of as Biblical. WHen in fact they are NOT. SGM does not preach the gospel, they plant churches. That IS their version of evangelism and mission work – planting new churches, shepherding their flocks, etc. So a definition of the gospel should be taken directly out of Scripture, not repackaged for the convenience of an aberrant evangelical organization that has some serious accusations against it presently.

  3. I couldn’t agree more with Pheobe. Sovereign Grace ministries has in large part manipulated it’s people with their own subtle twists on true Gospel truth. The leadership is in dire need of repentance. As well all are. God Bless.

  4. I must say that I have never heard as many disgruntled attendees to a church in my life as I have about SGM. There is an entire website set up for people who have been wounded in this church. I know a lot of big evangelic churches and NEVER have I heard what I hear about this church. I am an Evangelical Christian and everytime I hear Mahoney or Piper speak, I feel like I am being judged and condemned and I’ve never even been to the church. I pray that God brings truth to the light in regard to this organization because I get a chill through my bones from this church.
